- O.E. geostran dжg, from geostran "yesterday" (from P.Gmc. *gestra-, from PIE *ghes) + dжg "day." Yesteryear coined 1870 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti to translate Fr. antan (from V.L. *anteannum "the year before") in a poem by Villon.
